Aces Up – A two pair, with the upper pair being aces.
All-In – Where a player moves all of his chips into the pot on one hand.
Ante – A small forced bet placed in the pot at the starting of each deal during poker games.
Back-Door Flush – When a player needs all of his or her remaining avaliable cards to be one suit in order for them to hit the flush. Mostly used in holdem, when a player has 3 cards to the flush on the flop and needs the turn and river cards to make the flush.
Back-Door Straight – Same idea as the back-door flush, but instead the player needs the cards towards a straight.
Bad Beat – When one player loses to another, when they were executing well. This usually happens when one player is winning the hand the whole time, and another manages to pull of a better hand on the last card or cards.
Blank – An irrelevant card, one that is not needed by the player to complete their hand.
Bust – To be beaten on either a very large pot, or to lost all of your money in one round.
Buy-In – A set limit for the lowest amount of money a person can cash into the game for.
Call – To match a previous player’s bet, but not raise it any higher.
Cap – A set limit on how many times raises can go around the table.
Double Up – Occurs when a player goes all in or close to all in, and wins the pot, doubling their amount of chips.
Drawing Dead – When the player’s hand cannot win the pot, even with more cards coming.
Fish – A nickname for a player that is new or inexperienced.
Free-Card – A term used to describe a round of poker where the players do not raise, thus giving everyone an extra card without paying.
Full Boat – A hand that consists of a three of a kind and a pair together. Example: 2 Aces, 3 Kings.
Gut-Shot Straight Draw – Also known as an inside straight draw, this is a draw where the player needs one specific card to hit their stright. Example: Player has 6, 7, 9, 10. Needs a 8 to hit the straight.
Heads Up – Where two poker players play one on one against each other.
Hole Cards – This term refers to the cards you recieve from the dealer that only you can see (face down cards).
Kicker – When two players have equivalent hands (two pair, pair), it refers to their highest other card or cards, which will determine the winner.
Limp In – Usually used to almost bribe another player, it refers to someone who calls the pot instead of betting or folding.
Muck – Synonym of fold.
Nuts – A term that refers to the best possible hand at that point in the poker game. When a player has the nuts, they cannot be beaten.
Outs – The number of cards a player can draw in order to finish their desired hand.
Outside Draw – Opposite of an inside draw or gut-straight draw, this refers to someone who has four linking cards towards a straight, and needs one of two types of cards to win. Example: Player has 2, 3, 4, 5. They can draw an Ace or 6, this is an outside draw.
Pocket Pair – Used in holdem, when a player recieves a pair as thier two face down cards.
Ragged Flop – A flop with low cards, or a bad flop in general.
Rainbow Flop – A flop of three differently suited cards, this refers to the different “colors.”
Rock – Used as a term for a player who plays very tightly, and doesnt change their strategy much.
Rounder – A term for a proffessional poker player.
Short Stack – Refers to the player with the lowest amount of money out of everyone at their table.
Slowplay – A strategy where a player will check or play their hand very lightly, even though they have a very strong hand. Used to sucker in people to believe they have the best hand, and get them to bet more than they usually would.
Suited Connectors – Two cards that are of the same face value, and are also in numerical order.
Tell – A major part of poker, refers to a small habit or reaction a poker player will have when they have either a good or bad hand, giving other players reads on them.
Tilt – When a player is doing poorly, and their bad mood is making them play badly.
Turn – In holdem, this is the card that comes after the flop, and before the river.
